Leadership & Advocacy
You know a great deal about your community.
Advocacy & Leadership Development
CVCAC ensures that all voices are heard as we work to engage communities in finding innovative solutions to poverty.
We offer our participants and supporters numerous advocacy and leadership opportunities including:
- Program governance, such as the CVCAC Board of Directors and Head Start Policy Council
- Advisory committees
- Testifying in front of a Legislative committee Program evaluation
- Planning or leading trainings
- Attending legislative receptions or speaking at our annual Legislative breakfast
We provide coaching and support to assist community members in engaging policy makers. We work with people to construct and share their stories and experiences with the greater community. We also encourage self-advocacy, and offer people help in communicating with landlords, creditors, immigration or other officials to resolve issues.
CVCAC serves as a member of the Vermont Low Income Advocacy Council and other advocate groups throughout the state. Staff also attend various local community meetings to collaborate with area service providers, churches, private businesses and community members, to represent the interests of low-income families, and to advocate for systems change.
Board of Directors
The Central Vermont Community Action Council is uniquely governed by an 18-member tripartite board of directors which comes from three diverse segments of the community:
- at least one-third of the board's members must be from the low-income community
- up to one-third must be from the private sector
- and exactly one-third must be public officials.
CVCAC's board is responsible for agency direction, financial oversight, and policy.
If you are interested in serving on the CVCAC board, please contact Executive Director Hal Cohen at (802) 479-1053 or by email -
